Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists are board certified obstetrician/gynecologist physicians who have received specialized training in the assessment and management of high-risk pregnancies. Complications that could arise during pregnancy are hypertension, diabetes, preeclampsia or preterm labor. These physicians have received specialized training to include obstetric ultrasound and the ability to diagnose problems and severe medical issues while the fetus is still in the utero. Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists monitor mother and baby closely throughout the pregnancy and during labor and delivery. They also collaborate with a neonatologist on special care should a complication arise.
