UMC El Paso Heart Rhythm Clinic

Electrophysiology

Our Heart Rhythm Clinic provides state-of-the-art heart rhythm management services including advanced catheter ablations of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardias to cardiac device implantation and management of defibrillators and pacemakers. Both Dr. Zainul Abedin and his son Dr. Moeen Abedin believe in a multi-disciplinary approach to achieve the best patient outcomes with 40 years of combined experience.

The symptoms of arrhythmia range from palpitations, episodes of dizziness, and syncope (passing out).  The preliminary evaluation of these symptoms includes an electrocardiogram (EKG), and echocardiogram as well as ambulatory monitoring with an EKG system the patient wears at home to record the heart rhythm during the episodes of symptoms.  Once this evaluation is completed, a discussion of the management options, including pros and cons of each potential course of treatment, are reviewed to generate a plan based on the best available medical evidence.  Specific types of arrhythmias we treat:

  • Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT)
  • Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome (WPW)
  • Atrial Flutter
  • Atrial Tachycardia
  • Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)
  • Ventricular tachycardia (VT)

We also specialize in the implantation and management of cardiac rhythm devices, including:

  • Pacemakers for patients with symptoms due to slow heart rate
  • Internal cardiac defibrillators (ICDs) for patients at increased risk for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)
  • Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) for severe heart failure
  • Implantable loop recorder (ILR) to aid in the diagnosis of the heart rhythm disorder
  • Device and lead extraction

Every patient's cardiac rhythm device is checked personally by a board certified electrophysiologist.
