This type of surgery is not common, but it is important for a patient who has been in a bad trauma or has lost a lot of blood and is close to dying. In some emergency cases, patients are rushed to the O.R. The surgeon will make an incision in the chest (left side near the heart), wide enough to reach both hands in and squeeze the heart between his hands. Again, this is for the patient who has been in a very bad trauma but still has a chance of living as long as his heart continues to beat. The trauma surgeon will perform this surgery, but a heart surgeon will be called in to evaluate the case in order to advise if the patient will need further surgery.
