PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Program

Purpose:

Building on the educational components of the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) curriculum, UMC’s PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Program develops clinical pharmacists responsible for the medication related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. Upon completion of PGY1, residents will be eligible for board certification and for postgraduate year-two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Description:

The program objective is to provide the resident with a challenging, well-rounded training experience. The program’s emphasis will be in developing clinical and administrative skill sets and medication safety leadership.

Residents will gain experience caring for diverse patient populations in a variety of inpatient settings (i.e. emergency medicine, critical care, infectious disease). To further diversify patient care skills across the life-spectrum and practice settings, residents will also gain experience in ambulatory care and pediatrics.

By completing the residency program, the resident will demonstrate competency in the following:

  • Patient Care
  • Advancing Practice and Improving Patient Care
  • Leadership and Management
  • Teaching, Education, and Dissemination of Knowledge

Residency graduates should be able to obtain a position as a clinical faculty member or clinical pharmacy specialist. Graduates of this program will be prepared to pursue credentialing in a variety of board specialty areas (e.g. BCPS, BCACP, BCGP, CDE, CACP).

Why Residency?
I hope to continue my development as a newly graduated pharmacist through the mentorship and guidance provided by the excellent preceptors at UMC of El Paso. I am eager to learn more about my interests in pharmacy, while keeping an open-mind for avenues I have not yet explored. My goals with this experience are to discover and potentially create a path in pharmacy where I can thrive and be fulfilled in what I do everyday; while positively contributing to the lives of others.
