Nursing Support Services

UMC’s Nursing Support Services includes Nursing Education, Patient Education and the Administrators of the Day as well as a variety of support positions for the Department of Nursing.  Nursing Education is responsible for orienting all new Associates into the Department of Nursing, developing and providing educational activities primarily for Department of Nursing Associates as providers for the Texas Nurses Association Continuing Education Review and Approval Program.

Additionally, Nursing Support Services Associates conduct learning needs assessments, coordinate and implement continuing education programs and facilitate contractual agreements with affiliating agencies and educational institutions.  Nursing Support Services Associates also maintain UMC’s Education Bank, process education vouchers and maintain education records and files for Department of Nursing Associates.

Lorrie Giessel, MSN, RN
Director of Nursing Support Services

As the Director of Nursing Support Services, Mrs. Giessel is responsible for the overall operation, budget and personnel activities of the department. She supervises the administrators of the day as well as nursing education, affiliation program, clinical system and patient education.

In addition to her managerial duties, Mrs. Giessel serves as a program administrator for the hospital's continuing education providership which provides contact hours for nurses. She is a member of several planning committees such as nursing conferences, grand rounds and other educational offerings.

Adminitrators of the Day

The Administrators of the Day (AOD) are responsible for coordinating and supervising the administration of patient care and hospital systems during their designated shifts. The Accommodation Nurse Coordinator (ANC) is responsible for facilitating direct admissions and intra-hospital transfers.

Nursing Support Services Clinical Expert/Systems Associate is a combination position that serves the Department of Nursing in the capacity of providing design, development, implementation and information systems support of new, upgraded and replacement of Informatic systems contained in the Department of Nursing.

Patient Education is responsible for keeping appropriate staff apprised of the utilization of patient education resources in the betterment of treatment for the patient.  Various classes are offered by two Certified Diabetic Educators, one Dietician and one Childbirth Educator to meet University Medical Center of El Paso patient’s needs.  All classes are offered to the public. 

The Affiliation Program is part of Nursing Support Services.  Through the Affiliation Program, University Medical Center of El Paso has continuously offered programs that encourage and expose students throughout the community to healthcare careers.
